Colorado Fall 2013

The Story…

It’s a story often tirelessly repeated by Christians: “When you look at the mountains, you just see the beauty of the Lord.” This refrain popped into my head as we woke surrounded by shear cliffs, rock formations and the tree-filled hills and mountains of south-central Colorado. To my shame, it slightly irritated me. It felt so “cliché.” However, as I have had time to reflect, I knew my heart was wrong. You see, “He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.” (Ecc. 3:11)” The mountains haven’t always been there, and won’t always remain, but they serve their purpose. They are beautiful, breathtaking even. May we never dismiss the Lord’s beauty as “cliché,” or become bitter at those who proclaim it. They are simply echoing what the mountains proclaim: that the Lord is beautiful and worthy of more worship than we can give. Standing in the mountains is one of the rare places I can feel the paradox of eternity being so close, yet so far away.

The Trip…

It was also such a refreshing time for Jenn and I. The trip was our honeymoon of sorts and we truly were able to spend time and just enjoy one another. Most of all, we were refreshed by the Lord through his beauty and presence. We were so thankful for the time the Lord gave us to enjoy one another. Its crazy to think it was the first time we spent more than two days together without work getting in the way. We had the opportunity to do some hiking. We came face to face with a mule deer while on the trail and she just stared at us for what seemed like 10 minutes before she ran off. We also spent a day exploring Creede, Colorado, a small old mining town. We a had a great lunch there at Fardog. Lastly we got to explore Treasure Falls outside of Pagosa Springs. It was so cold that small icicles formed on all the railing near the bottom. There is such power in the water there. It even snowed one night!

I feel like Jenn and I grew so much closer on the trip and it was a great blessing for our marriage.  I am so grateful to be married to such a wonderful woman and I look forward to our future trips together. She is the best traveling buddy I know and my best friend.
